ABOUT THE POSITION

A Sr. Power Electronics Engineer is responsible for technical leadership related to designing and maintaining electronic systems in one or more products, with an emphasis on power conversion and solid-state relays. A Sr. Power Electronics Engineer will typically be assigned to designing DC, and occasionally AC, power electronics for controlling battery charging, regulating the voltage supplied by batteries during discharge, or providing safety disconnects to stop charge or discharge under load. Assisting in the design of other battery electronics systems such as telemetry, cell balancing, and safety disconnects may also be required. This position also assists the Engineering Manager with training, mentoring, and coaching junior engineers, and providing technical leadership of other engineers on projects. Our products include a wide range of custom battery assemblies that contain Battery Management Systems (BMS), battery cells, electronics circuits, electrical connections, and mechanical/thermal structures.  This position reports to the Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and delegate technical objectives and tasks to contributing engineers.
  • Assist in the mentoring, training, and guidance of junior engineers.
  • Coordinate and interface with multiple levels of functional groups and management to achieve project goals.
  • Interpret and manage customer and internal requirements as they relate to designing, testing, fielding, and sustaining compliant battery electronics systems.
  • Design, modify, and integrate DC-DC power converters of various topologies and power levels up to 100kW,  for use in battery charge control, balancing, and discharge output voltage regulation.
  • Design, modify, and integrate solid-state relays capable of carrying and interrupting currents up to 1000A.
  • Perform circuit design, analysis, simulation, and PCB layout around customer requirements to perform in harsh environments including vibration, shock, thermal cycling, humidity, corrosive atmospheres, and radiation.
  • Perform design verification testing on PCB assembly prototypes, document results, and iterate on the design.
  • Design measurement, analog signal conditioning, and A/D conversion circuits for various physical battery parameters such as voltage, current, temperature, and time.
  • Design and manage high current conduction paths from tens to hundreds of amperes for both battery charge and discharge.
  • Perform and drive parts selection, screening, testing, and cost estimation in a military/aerospace environment with  stringent requirements for military and space rated components.
  • Generate and maintain electronics engineering data deliverables such as drawings and PCB manufacturing data packages, compliance/verification matrices, FMEAs, electronics test reports, de-rating and parts stress analyses, current distribution analyses, reliability/MTBF analyses, etc.
  • Perform root cause analysis and define and implement corrective actions in response to technical design, manufacturing, test, and performance issues.
  • Generate and maintain product-focused ERP system data, such as Inventory Part records and Product Structures (indented BOMs).
  • Perform hardware support tasks including troubleshooting of existing assemblies, selection and justification of alternate components or alternate component sources, qualification testing, documentation updates and corrections, and other hardware related tasks as may be required.
  • Prepare and conduct presentations to peers, management, and external customers (written and oral).
  • Participate in the review and preparation of proposals, when needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • U.S. Persons
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering or related field required.
  • Minimum ten years of combined work experience or hands-on graduate experience in power electronics required
  • Experience in designing high power DC to DC converters is required
  • Experience in high-current solid-state relay design is required
  • Experience leading, training, and mentoring other engineers is required
  • Experience in AC to DC power conversion is preferred
  • Knowledge of analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion is preferred
  • Experience in precision voltage and current measurement is preferred
  • Experience in schematic capture, circuit simulation, and PCB layout is required; prior experience with Altium preferred
  • Embedded controller design and software/firmware programming experience/capability preferred
  • Experience designing for high reliability harsh environments preferred
  • Familiarity with AS9100, ISO9001, DoD, NASA and IPC standards and quality requirements preferred
  • Experience in development and maintenance of Engineering and Production documentation required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office for data analysis, reduction, and presentation required
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills preferred
  • Demonstrated self-starter and schedule-driven required
